What are the Eight Mansions?

The part of feng shui you can compute for a person โ€” and the part that needs someone standing in the room.

The idea

Feng shui (้ขจๆฐด) is mostly about a place, and a place has to be measured. But one strand of it starts with the person instead: ํŒ”ํƒ (ๅ…ซๅฎ…, Eight Mansions) takes your birth year and sex and derives a single number, your ๋ช…๊ด˜ or Kua, which answers to one of the eight trigrams. Kua 1, 3, 4 and 9 make up the East group (๋™์‚ฌ๋ช…); 2, 6, 7 and 8 make up the West group (์„œ์‚ฌ๋ช…). Each Kua has four directions that suit it, and each of the four has a job: ์ƒ๊ธฐ (็”Ÿๆฐฃ) for what you want to grow, ์ฒœ์˜ (ๅคฉ้†ซ) for rest and recovery, ์—ฐ๋…„ (ๅปถๅนด) for people, ๋ณต์œ„ (ไผไฝ) for steadiness.

How Bokki calculates it

Reduce the last two digits of your solar year to a single digit โ€” call it r. A man born before 2000 takes 10 โˆ’ r, from 2000 onward 9 โˆ’ r; a woman before 2000 takes r + 5, from 2000 onward r + 6; then reduce again. A result of 5 has no trigram of its own, so it becomes 2 (ๅค) for a man and 8 (่‰ฎ) for a woman. East-group Kua draw their four directions from north, south, east and southeast; West-group Kua from west, northwest, northeast and southwest. We checked the formula against eight published anchors โ€” 1963 male โ†’ 1, 1972 male โ†’ 1, 1980 male โ†’ 2, 1985 male โ†’ 6, 1994 male โ†’ 6, 1994 female โ†’ 9, 2000 male โ†’ 9, 2004 female โ†’ 1 โ€” and all eight agree.

Why we ask for your birthday, not just your birth year

Because โ€œyearโ€ is ambiguous here, and the ambiguity can invert your answer. The solar year turns at ็ซ‹ๆ˜ฅ in early February, so a birth in January belongs to the previous year โ€” and since the East and West groups alternate, being off by one year can flip your entire set of directions from one half of the compass to the other. The schools genuinely split on this: classical practice uses ็ซ‹ๆ˜ฅ, while most of the popular Kua tables you will find online use the plain calendar year. Bokki follows ็ซ‹ๆ˜ฅ, because the rest of our engine does and we would rather be consistent than popular โ€” and when that choice changed your answer, the page tells you it did. One honest edge remains: ็ซ‹ๆ˜ฅ falls at an exact hour and we read dates only, so if you were born on ็ซ‹ๆ˜ฅ day itself, the hour decides and we cannot tell you which side of it you are on.

What Bokki does not calculate

The building. Real Eight Mansions work measures a house's sitting-and-facing with a ๋‚˜๊ฒฝ (luopan) on the spot, and no browser can do that โ€” so Bokki never tells you your home is an East-group or West-group house, and never assigns your rooms. We do not do ํ˜„๊ณต๋น„์„ฑ (Flying Stars), which needs the construction period and a facing measured in degrees. And we publish only the four auspicious directions. The tradition names four inauspicious ones as well; we leave those out on purpose, for the same reason we leave out ๆ–นไฝๆฎบ in Nine Star Ki. A direction is a grain to lean with when something matters โ€” which way to set the desk, which way to face in a conversation that counts โ€” and never a rule you are failing by breaking.

Where you meet it

Two places. The Kua page gives you your number, your group and all four directions with what each one is for. The direction page is the practical one โ€” for moving house, or deciding which way the desk or the headboard should point. Your best direction also shows up as one line inside your daily reading, next to your Saju day-master and your Nine Star.

Questions people actually ask

How is my Kua number calculated?

Reduce the last two digits of your solar birth year to a single digit and call it r. A man born before 2000 takes 10 โˆ’ r and from 2000 onward 9 โˆ’ r; a woman before 2000 takes r + 5 and from 2000 onward r + 6; then reduce again. A 5 has no trigram of its own, so it becomes 2 for a man and 8 for a woman. Bokki checked the formula against eight published anchors and all eight agree.

Does my Kua year change at Lunar New Year?

Not at Lunar New Year, but it does change at ็ซ‹ๆ˜ฅ in early February, and the schools genuinely split here. Classical practice uses ็ซ‹ๆ˜ฅ while most popular Kua tables use the plain calendar year. Bokki follows ็ซ‹ๆ˜ฅ to stay consistent with the rest of its engine, asks for your birth date rather than only the year, and tells you on screen when that choice changed your answer.

Can Bokki tell me whether my home has good feng shui?

No. Real Eight Mansions work measures a building's sitting-and-facing with a compass on the spot, and no browser can do that, so Bokki never calls your home an East-group or West-group house and never assigns your rooms. Flying Stars is out for the same reason: it needs the construction period and a facing measured in degrees.

What are the four directions for?

Each one has a job. ์ƒ๊ธฐ is for what you want to grow, ์ฒœ์˜ for rest and recovery, ์—ฐ๋…„ for people and relationships, and ๋ณต์œ„ for staying steady. East-group Kua draw theirs from north, south, east and southeast; West-group Kua from west, northwest, northeast and southwest. Bokki publishes only these four and treats them as a grain to lean with rather than a rule.
