Western astrology vs Vedic astrology

Same sky, same ephemeris — a 24° gap in where zero degrees sits explains almost everything.

The short answer

Western and Vedic astrology can name a different sign for the exact same birth, and the whole disagreement traces back to one number: where each tradition puts 0°. Western (tropical) astrology puts it at the spring equinox. Vedic astrology — Jyotiṣa — puts it among the fixed stars (sidereal). Those two zero points currently sit about 24° apart, which is often enough to move you into the neighbouring sign.

Neither zero point is a mistake. They are two different rulers measuring the same sky, and the gap between them has a name: the ayanāṃśa.

Same Moon, two names

The clearest way to see it is to pick one object at one instant and read it both ways. At midnight UT on 1 August 2026 the Moon's tropical ecliptic longitude — the number Western astrology reads — is 336.17°, which is 6.2° into Pisces. Subtract that day's Lahiri ayanāṃśa, 24.23°, and you get a sidereal longitude of 311.94°, which is 11.9° into Kumbha — the rāśi Jyotiṣa uses, and the sign Western astrology calls Aquarius. One Moon, one position in the sky, two names, because the two rings in the figure below start counting from different places.

The same instant also has a tropical Sun sign: by the Western calendar table, 1 August 2026 is Leo. Vedic astrology doesn't compute a separate sidereal Sun sign the way it computes the Moon's rāśi — which is the next thing worth being precise about.

A worked example from our own code: at midnight UT on 1 August 2026 the Moon's tropical longitude is 336.17 degrees, which is 6.2 degrees into Pisces. Subtracting the Lahiri ayanāṃśa of 24.23 degrees for that instant leaves a sidereal longitude of 311.94 degrees, which is 11.9 degrees into Kumbha, the rāśi Western astrology calls Aquarius. Two traditions, two lead planets

Western astrology's most familiar output is the Sun sign — the one printed in a magazine horoscope — joined by the Moon sign and the rising sign to make what people call the Big Three. Vedic astrology leads with the Moon instead: the nakshatra your Moon fell into at birth sits closer to “your sign” in Jyotiṣa than anything the Sun is doing, and it also fixes the Vimśottarī daśā, the 120-year timeline of planetary periods.

That's a second, separate reason the two traditions can feel like they're describing different people, and it applies even before the ayanāṃśa enters the picture: one system leans on the Sun, the other leans on the Moon.

How Bokki computes each side

The Western Sun sign is a date table, and we disclose the table's honest flaw: the Sun crosses each 30° line at an instant that drifts about a day against the calendar year, so Bokki checks the day before and after yours and flags a cusp with the neighbouring sign rather than picking one silently.

The Western Moon sign and rising sign are not a table — they come from an ephemeris (astronomy-engine, MIT-licensed, JPL-derived): the Moon's geocentric ecliptic longitude divided by 30° gives the Moon sign, and local sidereal time plus the true obliquity of date and your birth latitude, solved through the classical ascendant formula, gives the rising sign.

The Vedic side runs on that same ephemeris, then subtracts the Lahiri (Chitrapakṣa) ayanāṃśa — 22.460148 + 1.396042·T + 0.000308·T², with T in Julian centuries from 1900 — before dividing the sidereal circle into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each. Same sky, same instrument; only the zero point subtracted before the division changes.

The gap has a history, and it keeps growing

The two zero points weren't always 24° apart. Earth's axis wobbles slowly (precession), pulling the equinox backward against the fixed stars by roughly one degree every 72 years. Run Bokki's own ayanāṃśa polynomial backward and it crosses zero — the point where the two rulers agreed — around the year 285 CE. Every century since, the gap has widened by about 1.4°.

That means this article's numbers have a shelf life. At the start of 2000 the ayanāṃśa was 23.856°; by the start of 2026 it had grown to 24.220°. Whatever the gap is when you're reading this, it's a little larger than what's printed here.

What Bokki does not compute

On the Western side: houses and aspects. A full natal chart divides the sky into twelve houses — Placidus, whole sign, equal, and practitioners genuinely disagree which is right — and measures angles between planets. Bokki computes neither, so it never draws a wheel and calls it a chart.

On the Vedic side: a full kundli. Bokki computes the Moon's nakshatra, pada and rāśi, the Vimśottarī daśā balance at birth, and the lagna when you give a time and place — not nine grahas placed in twelve houses. There are no divisional charts (no navāṃśa), no yogas, no doṣas, no 36-point guṇa milan, no muhūrta, and no remedies to buy.

And one fact worth stating plainly, because it's easy to assume otherwise: Bokki does not compute a sidereal Sun sign. Jyotiṣa's own convention leads with the Moon, and our Vedic engine follows that convention rather than inventing a “Vedic Sun sign” feature nobody asked our sources for. If you're looking for that specific number, this page — and this engine — doesn't produce it. We'd rather say so than guess.

Bokki computes both honestly from the same ephemeris rather than picking a side, and says which convention produced each number.

Does my Western Sun sign map onto a Vedic sign?

Not directly, for two reasons at once: the ~24° ayanāṃśa gap can shift the sign, and the two traditions don't even lead with the same body — Western astrology's headline sign is the Sun, while Vedic astrology leads with the Moon's nakshatra and rāśi. Comparing them sign-for-sign conflates a zero-point difference with a different-planet difference.

Does Bokki calculate a Vedic Sun sign?

No. Our Vedic engine follows Jyotiṣa's own convention of reading the Moon — nakshatra, pada, rāśi — and there is no function anywhere in our code that computes the Sun's sidereal position. If you want a sidereal Sun sign specifically, that number isn't one we produce; we'd rather say so than invent it.
