Career (職) Reading: How Does Bokki Actually Pick the Line?
Four separate calculations feed two sentences, in a fixed order — and a stronger relation type can outrank a closer one when this year's branch meets your chart.

The short answer
Bokki's /career screen builds its two paragraphs out of four independent checks, stacked in a fixed order. The opening sentence of the first paragraph comes from just one of three values: whether your day master reads strong, weak, or balanced. A second sentence is added from your month command (月令) — a five-way ten-god reading of your month branch's dominant hidden stem, the same field Bokki's gyeokguk article already explains, here re-read as "which channel your working life runs through" rather than a formal classification. The second paragraph starts from this year's heavenly stem, translated into one of ten possible ten-god relationships to your day master, with a reception clause (smooth or heavy) that depends on both that relationship and your strength reading. Finally, if this year's earthly branch forms any of four fixed relations — clash, self-punishment, harm, or harmony — with any of your four natal branches (year, month, day, and hour, when known), one closing clause is added — and which of up to four possible matches gets to speak is decided by the strength of the relation type first, not by which natal pillar is closest to you.
The rule — four layers, and a relation ladder that outranks position
Layer one is the coarsest: your day master's strength collapses to exactly one of three values (strong, weak, balanced), and that alone picks the opening sentence — nothing about your month, this year, or your ten-god shares enters yet. Layer two reads your month branch's dominant hidden stem as one of ten possible ten-god relationships to your day master (five relation groups — companion, output, wealth, officer, resource — split by whether the two stems' yin-yang polarity matches or differs), and this reading never changes with birth time, since the month branch itself doesn't. Layer three reads this year's own heavenly stem the same way, against your day master, and folds in whether that specific ten-god matches your favorable elements at your specific strength level — the same ten-god relationship (say, an officer-group year) can read as "you're overwhelmed" for a weak chart and "you're well-suited to lead" for a strong one. Layer four is the branch layer: this year's earthly branch is checked against your natal day, hour, month, and year branches (in that reading order) for four fixed relationship types — clash (冲), self-punishment (刑), harm (害), and harmony (合) — and Bokki's screen searches relation types first, in the fixed strength order clash > self-punishment > harm > harmony, only using natal-pillar position (day, then hour, then month, then year) to break a tie within the same relation type. Exhaustively checking every pair of the twelve branches against each other turns up exactly 12 clashes, 4 self-punishments, 12 harms, 12 harmonies, and 104 pairs with no fixed relation at all, out of 144 possible pairings — so most year-branch checks add nothing, and it's genuinely uncommon for two different relation types to both be present in the same chart the way the worked example below shows.
Worked example — one relation beats a closer one, and one field survives losing your birth time
Take the chart Bokki's daeun, sipsin, guardian and exam articles already use: born 15 May 1990, 14:30, Seoul — day master Metal (庚). With the birth time, this chart reads weak, and its month command lands in the officer group (官), read here as "organized, public work with a seat and a rule." Drop the birth time and the overall strength flips to strong (the same flip the exam article measures) — but the month command stays exactly officer, because it's read from the month branch alone, which birth time never touches: one field that survives the birth-time gap, sitting right next to one (the opening sentence) that doesn't. This year, 2026, carries the heavenly stem 丙 (Fire); against this Metal day master, that is a 七殺 (Challenge) relationship — an officer-group year, the same group as the month command, arriving twice in one year for this person. Read against the weak-chart strength, that pairing gets a caution — big pressure on a chart with a slight vessel; read against the strong-chart strength, the identical ten-god relationship instead reads as a comfortable fit for taking on a title. Now the branch layer: 2026's earthly branch is 午. Checked against this chart's four natal branches, day (辰) and month (巳) form no fixed relation, hour (未) forms a harmony (合) with 午, and year (午, the same character) forms a self-punishment (刑) — a branch can self-punish against an identical copy of itself, one of Bokki's four fixed self-punishment branches. Both a harmony and a self-punishment are present in the same chart at once — the article's opening claim, not a hypothetical. Bokki's screen picks by relation strength first: self-punishment outranks harmony in the fixed ladder, so despite the hour branch's harmony sitting in a closer reading position, the year branch's self-punishment is the one that earns a sentence, and the harmony goes unmentioned. A rough census (3,000 dates drawn from an even, seeded sample spanning 1950 to 2020, each paired with one of the twelve two-hour branch windows, compared with and without that birth time) found the overall strength reading itself flips in 22.7% of cases when birth time is missing, and the year's reception verdict (whether this year's ten-god reads as smooth or heavy) flips in 9.9% of cases — smaller, because it depends on strength but isn't identical to it.
What this calculation doesn't decide
This calculation names a ten-god relationship and a branch relationship — it does not name a job title, an industry, a salary figure, or a promotion date, and it carries no relationship to Bokki's separate wealth or love readings, which read different fields for different questions. It reads the classical companion-excess pattern (群劫爭財's career-side cousin) only as a qualitative caution about sharing credit, never as a number, and it does not weigh the second- or third-strongest ten-god candidates the way a fuller structural reading (格局) might — only the single dominant hidden stem of the month branch. It does not ask your gender, and it never turns strength, month command, this year's ten-god, or the branch relation into a score or percentage on your own screen — the percentages in this article exist to explain the code, not to appear as an output.
Closing note — four checks, one fixed order, and a ladder that ranks type over distance

None of this is a verdict on your job; it's the arithmetic sitting under two paragraphs that already exist on your screen.
