What is 화개 (hwagae)?
A seat that builds its own world in the hours spent alone.
In plain words
Some people come alive in the hours nobody is watching. They go off alone, dig into one thing, and come back with something that did not exist before — a drawing, a proof, a repair, a piece of writing. In Saju there is a seat for that, and it is called hwagae (華蓋). If your chart has it, the tradition reads you as someone whose grain shows up in depth rather than in the middle of a crowd.
The name means “flowered canopy” — the ceremonial cover carried over a throne or an altar. People often write it 화개살 with a 살 (殺) on the end, and 살 looks alarming, but the suffix is just how this family of markers is named. Bokki writes it 華蓋 without the 殺, because we do not read it as a misfortune. It is a description of a seat, not a verdict.
How Bokki computes it
It is a four-line table, and the key is the lower letter of the year you were born. The twelve branches fall into four trines of three. If your year branch is 申, 子 or 辰, the hwagae seat is 辰. If it is 巳, 酉 or 丑, the seat is 丑. If it is 寅, 午 or 戌, the seat is 戌. If it is 亥, 卯 or 未, the seat is 未. Then we look at all four lower letters of your chart — year, month, day and hour — and if that branch appears anywhere among them, hwagae is present.
Notice that all four answers are 辰, 戌, 丑 or 未. That is not a coincidence: those four are the closing branch of each trine, the storehouse where the group's energy is put away. That is the traditional reason the seat reads as inwardness — it is the place where a thing is kept rather than the place where it runs.
One worked example. Born 2 November 1988 at 09:10 in Busan, the pillars are 戊辰 壬戌 辛酉 癸巳. The year branch is 辰, which puts the chart in the 申子辰 group, whose hwagae seat is 辰 — and the year branch itself is 辰, so it is present. And a detail that matters: if you do not tell us your birth time, we drop the hour pillar out of this check entirely. A second chart shows what that costs. Born 11 February 1990 at 21:40 in Seoul, the pillars are 庚午 戊寅 丁未 庚戌 — the year branch 午 puts it in the 寅午戌 group, whose seat is 戌, and 戌 appears exactly once, in the hour. Give the hour and hwagae is there; withhold it and that chart carries no star at all. We would rather say nothing than judge a letter we do not have.
What we do not compute
We use the year branch only. Some lineages find the star from the day branch instead, and some look at both. Bokki keeps one basis so that the same person never gets two different answers on two different screens, but that is a choice, not a proof — a reader working from the day branch may legitimately tell you something else.
We report presence, not amount. If the seat shows up twice we still say it is present — we do not count it, stack it, or turn it into a strength number. We also read it only in the eight letters you were born with; we do not check whether a decade or a year brings it in later.
And this is the line we hold hardest: hwagae is not evidence that you are artistic. It is not a talent certificate, a diagnosis, or a reason to change what you do. Inside the tradition itself, how much weight these special stars deserve is contested — the mainstream of Korean 자평 practice leans on the Ten Gods, the frame and the favorable element, and treats stars like this as a side note. Bokki uses it the same way: as one extra grain in a reading, switched on only when it is really there, and never as a grade.
Closing note — one table, four storehouse branches, no hour guessed
In short: hwagae is one lookup on the lower letter of your birth year — sort it into one of four trine groups (申子辰 · 巳酉丑 · 寅午戌 · 亥卯未) and read off that group's storehouse branch (辰 · 丑 · 戌 · 未), then check whether that single branch appears anywhere across your four pillars. The worked chart above (1988-11-02, 09:10, Busan — 戊辰 壬戌 辛酉 癸巳) shows the fastest case: the year branch 辰 already sits in the 申子辰 group, whose storehouse is 辰 itself, so the seat is confirmed by the year pillar alone, before month, day or hour are even checked.
What we chose not to do sits right next to it: we read the storehouse from the year branch only, never the day branch some lineages use instead, and we never let an unknown birth time silently stand in for a guess — the 11 February 1990 chart above carries hwagae when an hour is given and carries no star at all when it is withheld, because its 戌 sits in the hour pillar alone and a missing hour pillar is dropped from the check rather than assumed. And presence is where the reading stops: hwagae never becomes a count, a stacked strength number, or a claim about talent — inside 자평 practice itself these special stars are a side note next to the Ten Gods and the favorable element, and Bokki treats it the same way.
