A sun sign is a lookup: give a date, get a sign. The ascendant is a calculation on the turning Earth — it sweeps the whole zodiac in a day, and how fast it sweeps depends on how far north or south you were born.

The short answer

The ascendant is the point of the ecliptic that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. Because the Earth turns roughly one degree of sky every four minutes, that point moves through all twelve signs in about a day — so the minute matters. And because the horizon tilts with latitude, the same instant shows a different rising sign in Seoul, Singapore, Reykjavik and Sydney — so the place matters too. Bokki computes it from the classical formula with a real ephemeris and no lookup tables, and if you have not told us a birthplace it shows you no rising sign at all rather than a plausible wrong one.

The arithmetic — three inputs, one formula

Three numbers go in. First, the local sidereal time: the ephemeris gives Greenwich apparent sidereal time for your birth instant, and adding your east longitude turns it into the right ascension of the midheaven — how far the sky has turned above your particular meridian. Second, the true obliquity of the ecliptic for that date, the tilt between the Earth's equator and the plane the Sun appears to travel in, which the same ephemeris supplies. Third, your geographic latitude. Those three go through the classical ascendant formula, an arctangent that returns the ecliptic longitude of the rising point, and the sign is whichever thirtieth of the circle that longitude falls into. Two independent checks confirm it rather than a table: push the computed point back through the ephemeris's own ecliptic-to-horizon rotation and it lands at altitude zero on the eastern horizon — which is the definition of the ascendant, arrived at by a completely separate code path — and a published chart anchor lands where it should. Subtract the Lahiri ayanamsha from the same longitude and you get the Vedic lagna from the identical calculation.

Worked example — one chart, one instant, and how little it takes to move it

Take 15 May 1990, 14:30, Seoul. The sun sign is Taurus, and it is Taurus at every hour of that day, because that function only ever sees a date. The ascendant at 14:30 is Virgo at 23.60 degrees. Subtract the Lahiri ayanamsha for that date, 23.72 degrees, and the Vedic lagna is Simha — Leo, a whole sign away from the Western answer, from the same instant. Now nudge the clock. Thirty-six seconds later, the lagna crosses into Kanya; the Western sign does not change for another thirty-two minutes. The two systems put their boundaries in different places, so the same recorded minute can be safely rounded in one tradition and wrong in the other. Nudge the place instead, holding the instant fixed: Seoul is rising Virgo, Singapore is rising Leo, Reykjavik is rising Gemini, and Sydney is rising Libra. Hold the longitude fixed and move only the latitude, from the equator up to 66 degrees north, and the rising degree drifts from 21.47 to 25.68 within Virgo — the horizon tilting under the same sky.

The signs do not rise at equal speed

This is the part almost no chart calculator says out loud, and it is the reason a rough birth time hurts more for some people than others. If you measure how long each sign takes to cross the eastern horizon at Seoul's latitude, the longest — Leo and Scorpio, 148.9 minutes each — take almost exactly twice as long as the shortest, Aries and Pisces at 75.5 minutes each. Run the same measurement at the equator and the spread nearly vanishes: 128.4 minutes at the top, 111.3 at the bottom, a ratio of 1.15 instead of 1.97. Two things fall out of that measurement without anyone writing them down. The signs pair up exactly as classical astrology's long and short ascension pairs do — Aries with Pisces, Taurus with Aquarius, Gemini with Capricorn, Cancer with Sagittarius, Leo with Scorpio, Virgo with Libra — because the geometry is symmetric about the equinoxes, and we never entered that pairing anywhere; it is what the formula does. And the twelve durations add up to 1436 minutes, not 1440: a sidereal day, because the horizon is chasing the stars, not the Sun.

The signs fall into equal pairs — Aries with Pisces, Taurus with Aquarius, Gemini with Capricorn, Cancer with Sagittarius, Leo with Scorpio, Virgo with Libra — which is exactly the classical long and short ascension pairing, and it comes out of the formula rather than a table. What we don't compute

Without a birthplace there is no rising sign on the screen. The Moon still gets an answer with a documented fallback, but the ascendant is left blank, because a wrong sign that looks right is worse than an honest gap. Above 89.5 degrees of latitude the formula degenerates and we decline rather than print something. We assume standard time for the entered clock time and say so on the screen, because we cannot know from a date and a city whether a country was on daylight saving that week. We compute the ascendant itself and nothing built on top of it — no house cusps in any system, no aspects to the ascendant, no chart ruler. And we do not tell you what your rising sign means about who you really are; the tradition calls it the mask you meet the world in, and that is where our description stops.

Closing note — precision is the honest part

In short: the sun sign asks for a date, the rising sign asks for a minute and a place, and the difference is not fussiness — it is what the sky actually does while you are being born. One chart, 15 May 1990 in Seoul, is Virgo rising by the Western reckoning and Simha lagna by the Vedic one at the same instant; thirty-six seconds moves one of those answers and not the other. If your birth time is an approximation, the honest thing is to know that, and to know that at Seoul's latitude a rough guess costs you more in Aries than it does in Leo.

Why does my rising sign need a birth time when my sun sign doesn't?

The sun stays in one sign for about a month, so a date is enough. The ascendant is the point rising over the eastern horizon, and the turning Earth moves it through all twelve signs in roughly a day — about one degree every four minutes.

Why do you also need my birthplace?

The formula takes your longitude, to know how far the sky has turned above your own meridian, and your latitude, because the horizon tilts with it. At one single instant the rising sign is Virgo in Seoul, Leo in Singapore, Gemini in Reykjavik and Libra in Sydney.

Both come from the same computed longitude; the Vedic one subtracts the Lahiri ayanamsha, about 23.7 degrees for a 1990 birth. That shifts the boundaries, so the two systems can name signs a whole step apart at the same instant.
