Dreaming of a dragon
In Korean tradition the dragon is the highest of all dreams — read as rising status, rare success, and the most treasured of pregnancy dreams.
No dream ranks higher in Korean 해몽 than the dragon. In East Asian thought the 용 is not a monster but a sovereign creature of water and sky, tied to rain, rivers, kings and the throne itself; the king's face was called 용안 and his robe 곤룡포. A dream of one is read as elevation — office, recognition, a name that travels. As a 태몽 it is the one families remember for generations. Direction carries the weight: a dragon rising into the sky is the full reading, while a dragon still coiled in water is read as the same fortune not yet arrived. The 이무기, the serpent that has not yet become a dragon, has its own reading: power that is close but not finished.
- A dragon rises into the sky
- The complete reading — 등룡, the ascent. Read as recognition, promotion, a long effort finally becoming visible to others.
- You ride the dragon, or it comes into your arms
- Read as the strongest 태몽 in the tradition: a child of rare promise. Also read as authority that becomes yours rather than authority you watch.
- A dragon still in water, or an 이무기 not yet risen
- The same fortune, not yet arrived. The old books read this as timing rather than refusal — something that needs one more season.
- The dragon falls, or cannot rise
- Read as effort that stalls short of its moment. Tradition treats it as a delay to sit out, never as a verdict on the dreamer.
Dragon dreams tend to arrive when something has been building quietly for a long time. Whatever the tradition says, the dream itself is the mind admitting the size of what you have been carrying. That is worth noticing on its own.
Is a dragon dream the best 태몽?
It is the one tradition ranks highest, and the one families retell longest. Older books also read a dragon 태몽 as a child who will be known outside the family.
What if the dragon could not fly?
Read as timing, not failure. The tradition's word for it is 이무기 — the not-yet dragon — and it is a waiting reading, never a judgement.
Does a dragon dream predict promotion?
It is how the tradition reads the symbol: rising status. It is a reading, not a prediction, and nothing here can calculate your career.
On the dream page you write your dream in your own words, and Bokki does not guess at it — she compares your sentence against a fixed list of words, one list per symbol. (If a language model is reachable it writes the reply instead; the word list is the reader that is always there.) This symbol is called by 11 words:
| Script | Words that call this symbol |
|---|---|
| Hangul | 용이 · 용을 · 청룡 · 용꿈 · 이무기 |
| Japanese | 龍 · 竜 · ドラゴン |
| Latin script (English, Spanish, Portuguese) | dragon · dragón · dragão |
Hangul words that are a one-syllable noun plus a case particle only count when no Hangul letter comes directly before them, because in that position they are usually the tail of a longer word rather than the word itself. On this list the rule applies to: 용이 · 용을
Latin-script words count at word boundaries only, so a longer word that merely happens to contain those letters does not count. The plural tails -s and -es are allowed, so a plural still counts as the same word.
Japanese and Han-character words have no space marking where a word ends, so they are still matched as plain substrings. We would rather say that than pretend the reader is cleverer than it is.
In the dictionary this symbol sits at position 6 of 32. When one dream touches several symbols, only the first 4 in that order are shown, so a dream that touches many symbols may not reach this one.
